4人の少女たちの壮絶な最期と取り残された少年たちの無力さ・・・リスボン家の5人姉妹は伝説となる。セシリアの自殺がPTSDとなり、残された4人はそれが克服できないまま引きずられるように命を絶ったのだとか、遺伝的な問題だとか、近所の人々や偉い人たちが言うことは様々だけど・・・
But this is all a chasing after the wind. The essence of the suicides consisted not of sadness or mystery but simple selfishness. the girls took into their own hands decisions better left to God. They became too powerful to live among us, too self-concerned, too visionary, too blind. 248p
なのだろうと、大人になってしまった少年たちは思う。薄くなった頭髪と柔らかな腹。彼らの心の中から決して消し去ることができない少女たちの存在だけが、永遠に変わらない。残されたものとして生き続けるのも、しんどいよな。。
"A Catcher in the Rye" for our time という書評にも納得がいく。が、個人的には「誰も知らない｣を観終えたときに感じた無力感の方が近い。
