Cat's Cradle, one of Vonnegut's most entertaining novels, is filled with scientists and G-men and even ordinary folks caught up in the game. These assorted characters chase each other around in search of the world's most important and dangerous substance, a new form of ice that freezes at room temperature. At one time, this novel could probably be found on the bookshelf of every college kid in America; it's still a fabulous read and a great place to start if you're young enough to have missed the first Vonnegut craze. 読みかけになっている普通のアメリカ人による実話集は、短編ばかりのためか続けて読んでいると無性に一息つきたくなってしまう。なので、以前ジュンク堂で購入したヴォネガットの小説を平行して読むことにする。
主人公はヨナだかジョンだかという名の作家。目下、彼が｢原爆の父｣と呼ばれたノーベル賞受賞者のエピソードを求めて、彼の子どもたちと接触を図っていくという話が展開しているのだが、karassとかBokononといった怪しげな単語が飛び交い、謎っぽい雰囲気。
